Privacy Policy

William T. Lowes Professional Corporation recognizes the importance of privacy and is committed to protecting the confidentiality and security of personal information. As lawyers licensed by the Law Society of Ontario, we are bound by strict professional obligations of solicitor-client privilege and confidentiality under the Rules of Professional Conduct, which often impose higher standards than general privacy laws. This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, disclose, retain, and protect personal information in compliance with the Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA) and our professional duties.

What Personal Information Do We Collect?

Personal information is any information about an identifiable individual. We collect information necessary to provide legal services, such as: name, contact details (address, phone, email), date of birth; financial, employment, health, family, or other details relevant to your legal matter; identification documents (e.g., passport, driver's licence); details of your legal issues and communications; and website usage data if applicable. We do not collect more information than necessary for the identified purposes.

How Do We Collect Personal Information?

We collect personal information primarily directly from you through retainer agreements, intake forms, questionnaires, emails, phone calls, meetings, or our website contact forms. We may also collect from third parties with your consent or as permitted/required by law, such as courts, tribunals, government agencies/registries, opposing parties/counsel, and other professionals (accountants, insurance companies). Collection is always by lawful and fair means.

Purposes for Collection, Use, and Disclosure

We collect, use, and disclose personal information primarily to provide legal advice, representation, and services; administer our client relationship (billing, file management); communicate with you; comply with legal/regulatory obligations; and detect/prevent fraud or errors. We do not sell personal information or disclose it to third parties for their marketing purposes.

Consent

By retaining us or providing personal information, you consent to its collection, use, and disclosure as described here. Consent may be express (written/verbal) or implied. You may withdraw consent at any time, subject to legal, contractual, or professional restrictions and reasonable notice. Withdrawal may limit or end our ability to provide services.

Disclosure of Personal Information

We may disclose personal information without additional consent when required or authorized by law, necessary for providing services, to collect fees, to service providers bound by confidentiality, or where the information is publicly available.

Retention and Security

We retain personal information only as long as necessary to fulfill purposes, meet legal requirements, or defend claims. Client files are typically retained for 15 years after closure, then securely destroyed. We protect personal information with reasonable safeguards, including physical security, technological measures, and administrative controls.
